Staddle Stone Studio

Originally designed as a potting shed and ceramics studio, this building’s uses have since grown to accommodate a mezzanine office and guest space. The timber frame structure is built on staddlestones. A simple palette of stone, zinc and larch help settle it into its rural surroundings. The mushroom-shaped stone supports were widely used throughout Britain from the 17th century. By elevating the building, the stones protected stored grain from vermin. Having fallen into decline by the end of the 19th century, there are few remaining buildings of this type that now survive. The revival of this lost typology, combined with a super insulated, light filled interior, provides year-round sanctuary in a quiet corner of rural Devon.
