Lower Brook

‘The proposed scheme is intended to provide a valuable addition to the quality of the dwelling, whilst remaining visually subservient to the existing heritage asset.’
Lying just beyond the North East fringes of Dartmoor National Park, this Grade 2 Listed cottage is thought to date from the 16th Century, and was once part of the nearby Fulford Estate. The single story addition to the rear of the existing dwelling sits below the topography at the rear of the site. Hidden within the garden, it hosts an open-plan kitchen/diner/living area. The proposed scheme is intended to provide a valuable addition to the quality of the dwelling, whilst remaining visually subservient to the existing heritage asset. Other than the removal of the modern kitchen, there are no changes to the internal layout, ensuring that the historic fabric of the building is maintained. Vernacular cues and natural materials of timber and stone, combined with a green roof sunken below the rear topography of the site, all aim to be sympathetic and visually subservient to the original cottage.
